Home window putty
To make the process less costly and not to doubt the quality of the mixture, you can prepare the sealant yourself. If you do everything right, the resulting composition will be no worse than the store one, and its cost will be much lower.
Exists several ways to make putty, but the resulting sealant must meet the following requirements:
- Have sufficient plasticity to fill small gaps;
- Environmental friendliness and safety for humans;
- Fast polymerization. The mastic should not dry for two days, ideally setting occurs in 5-10 minutes.
- For glass sealing, only materials that are resistant to temperature extremes, humidity and UV radiation are suitable.
- High adhesion to the materials to be bonded. This is especially important when processing wooden frames, where an equally strong adhesion to glass and wood is required.
- Maintain performance for at least a year after application.
It is desirable that the putty stand for as long as possible. For reapplication, the frame will have to be cleaned of the remnants of the old sealant, which often leads to damage to the paintwork, the appearance of new scratches and chips.
How to cover up windows correctly
The procedure for sealing wooden frames with putty has been known for a long time and does not differ in any complexity. It is performed step by step as follows:
- Remove the old seal mechanically (with a spatula, chisel, knife). It is better to warm up stubborn putty residues with a building hair dryer.
- Sand the wood with sandpaper. Ideally, the frame should be primed to extend the life of the wood.
- As a rule, the glass is held not only by the sealing compound, but also by several studs without caps, hammered along the perimeter of the frame. Check their condition and, if necessary, score new ones.
- Knead up a homemade putty and lay it over the joint in the form of a sausage, press it into the gap with your hands, and then level with a spatula.
Advice. Do not start work in too windy weather. When you free the glass from the old putty, gusts of wind will begin to shake it, so it will not be possible to lay the new mass tightly.
DIY outdoor sealant
As a rule, this is a putty that tightly fixes the glass in the frame. It is prepared by the methods described below.
Linseed oil and building chalk
In addition to fixing the glass, such a mixture can even partially restore wooden structures, close up large gaps and small corner chips. For cooking, you will need linseed oil (the usual one used in the kitchen is suitable) and chalk.
Cooking sequence:
- First, grind the chalk. The most convenient way is to wrap a piece of chalk in a dense material and tap on it with a heavy, hard object.
- The resulting chalk flour is mixed with linseed oil in a ratio of 4 to 1 (4 parts of dry powder and 1 part of liquid).
- The result should be a mixture similar in consistency to the dough. Readiness is checked by rolling the putty into a small ball - if it spreads, add more chalk powder.
- The mastic will have a yellowish tint, which works well for varnished wood. If desired, you can change the color by adding a dye.
There is a similar recipe, where ordinary drying oil is used instead of linseed oil. In terms of their mechanical characteristics, the putties are almost identical - there is a slight difference in smell.
Linseed oil with lime
The oil component is divided into two equal parts. One is heated in a metal container to a boil, after which the second is mixed into it. The dishes are selected in advance in volume, since the use of additional components is possible.
Then dry lime powder is poured into the oil in such an amount to bring the mixture to a pasty consistency. The result is a yellowish putty. If it is necessary to make the mass darker, wood soot or other dyes that are suitable in tone are added to it.
Appointment
Several types of putty and putty mixtures are produced based on several components:
- linseed oil;
- polyester;
- nitrocellulose.
drying oils;
Can be in the form of a paste, dry mix or packaged in containers.
Window putty is a thick paste. Apply to the junction of the frame and glass. The expediency of use is to ensure the ultimate level of tightness and strength. Cracks, cracks - cover with paste.
Indoor use
Representatives of this category of putties are not resistant to high humidity, are destroyed by heat and quickly lose their operational properties. Most of them are used as a temporary solution in emergency situations when there are no more effective means at hand.
- Flour with sand. Common food flour is used, which is found in most kitchens. Sand is added as a filler. Both materials are taken in equal amounts and diluted with water to a pasty state. In fact, the result is a dough reinforced with sand. It is advisable to use fine river sand or similar materials, crushed to a state close to dust.
- Talc with vegetable oil. Instead of talcum powder, white or decorative cement can be used. Vegetable oil (usually sunflower oil) must be unrefined. This is necessary for the formation of a precipitate in it, which is used as one of the ingredients. The oil sludge is mixed with talc to a pasty state. The putty cannot be stored and must be completely used up within half an hour.
Putty application process:
Preparation and application process
Before using a paste made according to one of the listed recipes, it is necessary to clean the windows from particles of the previous putty. To make the removal process easier, it is recommended to use a metal spatula or a wide knife. In addition, a building hairdryer may be needed to facilitate the procedure.
Plastic windows. Fast sealing of joints and seams:
The first step is to try to remove the composition without heating, by prying it with a spatula. If you cannot do this right away, you do not need to exert excessive force so as not to damage the glass. A small area of the solution should be warmed up with a hairdryer, and then easily removed.
After removing the old composition, carefully remove the glass from the frame and clean the wood parts from accumulated debris, old paint or putty residues. To achieve better adhesion between the paste and the window, sand the wood with coarse and then medium-grained sandpaper.
How to prepare a window putty from scrap materials:
Then you can proceed to the installation of glass using the prepared mass. The work is carried out in the following sequence:
- Stir thoroughly to a homogeneous consistency before applying the mixture.
- Then apply to the inside of the frame in the groove where the glass will be installed. Use a narrow spatula or knife for these purposes. There is another option - to roll the material into a long sausage, and then lay it and press it down a little.
- When the mixture has been placed around the entire perimeter of the frame, install the glass and lightly press it against the glazing bead from the solution. The excess protruding must be removed immediately before it is dry.After fixing, wipe the glass structure with a soft cloth.
- From the outside, you can hammer in a bead made of wood or use putty. After the solution has completely dried, the frame is painted.
If the house has wooden frames, in order to save money on insulation, you can make a window putty with your own hands. There are many popular and proven recipes, from which everyone can choose the best one for themselves.
Shop options
There are quite a few ready-made window putties, they differ in composition, temperature and mechanical characteristics, as well as in the materials on which they are preferably applied. Most sealants are versatile and can be used on both wood and plastic surfaces.

Which one to buy
There is a huge assortment. Subdivided into acetate and neutral mixtures. The purpose of the first is to increase the tightness of the glass. Second: sealing of seams between a smooth surface and a frame.
Acrylic window putty
Silicone window sealant
Polyurethane window sealant
List of popular:
- Acrylic. It prevents the penetration of air through the window joints, which means it perfectly retains heat in the house. When working with it, no special is required. protection. The paint is firmly held on it, quickly hardens. If necessary, you can plaster. But there is one drawback - it is unstable to moisture, over time it begins to turn yellow.
- Polyurethane. Don't know what kind of sealant to seal the cracks in plastic windows? Choose it! It is resistant to staining, temperature fluctuations, and virtually unaffected by chemicals.
- Butyl. Used for PVC when joining glass in double-glazed windows. It acts as a water vapor barrier between the glass panes.
- Silicone. It's easy to work with. The consistency of the paste penetrates deep into cracks and joints, hardens quickly and provides excellent protection from air. Silicone window putty, suitable for outdoor use. You should be prepared for shortcomings: it lags behind a strip, as it was, it was applied, forming an impressive gap after itself. It will not work to paint over such a sealant.
When choosing, pay attention to the composition of the putty, since each substance has its own advantages and disadvantages.
How to choose the right one
When buying a sealant for window frames made of wood or plastic, you must be guided by the following qualities:
- Compatibility with other materials.
- Resist chemicals, temperature fluctuations, ultraviolet radiation.
- Adhere not only to the frame, but also to a smooth surface.
