Non-standard windows: glazing and decor options - professional advice, photos

The highlight of a house project can be a curved window installed on a loggia, in a bay window, on a veranda or on a balcony. In general, it is not difficult to mount it, as evidenced by the experience of the carpenter.

In a village house, I was asked to install a protruding curved window. This work is not difficult, but it can also be simplified.

I know from experience that when installing such a structure, you have to make some changes to the frame of the house. Therefore, by ordering a window block with dimensions of 1 800 * 3 000 mm. I carefully read the instructions attached to it and studied the drawings of the frame of the house.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THIS ARTICLE IS HERE >>>

The instructions said that the opening should have dimensions of 1850 * 3,005 mm.

I made it, as usual, with a jumper beam resting on the uprights. To block the opening and the structure to withstand the load from the roof, as a lintel, I used three boards fastened together with a section of 50 * 250 mm each.

To install a protruding window, it was necessary to release wooden I-beam floor joists beyond the wall plane. According to the instructions for installing the window, a projection of 350 mm is recommended, but I released the logs by about 600 mm. The length of the outlets and the angles of the beams were washed down later. The curved window had to be installed on the first floor of the house with a 500 mm wide eaves of the roof, that is, it turned out to be protected by an overhang.

Although the ordered structures usually come assembled, I preferred that the window arrived disassembled - I did not want to deal with a block weighing almost 180 kg. The window consisted of five standard frames with wedge inserts between them.

Round plastic windows

These models enjoy the highest popularity due to their good performance and ease of use. Round plastic windows are manufactured using thermal bending technology. In a special chamber, the profiles are heated and then, using pre-prepared templates, give them the desired shape on a table with a perfectly smooth surface. Cured plastic does not straighten and retains its previous properties. Thanks to this, round structures are successfully made from it, which have many advantages:

  • high level of noise absorption;
  • energy efficiency;
  • durability - up to 50 years;
  • color fastness;
  • tightness.

This method has one drawback - you cannot reinforce the frames and sashes with reinforcement. This is due to the fact that it is impossible to bend the softened PVC together with the hard metal. It is also impossible to insert a radius insert into a frozen bent plastic workpiece, therefore the rigidity of such structures depends entirely on the properties of the PVC profile. As a result, large-sized products without internal bridges have a risk of deformations that can provoke depressurization.

To make large round windows, PVC profiles are rarely reinforced. According to special technology, it is more laborious and expensive. A special reinforcing insert is used to give rigidity. Together with the profile, it softens in the thermal bath, since it is made of a composite material that can change its rigidity. After heat treatment, the inner liner is quickly and neatly inserted into the profile chamber.The rest of the sequence of actions is exactly the same as in the manufacture of round windows without reinforcement.

A machine has already been developed and is being produced, which is capable of giving a curved shape to plastic profiles without placing them in a thermal bath. Bending is carried out using 3 plastic rollers and a hair dryer, which minimally heats the PVC. This equipment gives hope for the imminent appearance of an affordable technology for reinforcing round windows.

Round aluminum windows

Depending on the requirements for energy efficiency, a round aluminum window can be made from both cold and warm profiles. This allows you not to overpay when the products are ordered for installation in unheated rooms. Unlike cold windows, which are entirely made of aluminum, warm windows are made of profile systems with an additional liner made of polymer material. This element has a low thermal conductivity, which helps to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature at no extra cost.
Cold and warm windows are made using roll forming equipment, which allows you to give metal blanks the desired shape. This technology is based on the fact that aluminum profiles are passed through a system of rollers. Under the influence of a uniformly distributed external force, after a certain number of cycles, the molded elements become curved. Due to the properties of aluminum, round windows made of this material have the following advantages:

  • long service life - from 80 to 100 years;
  • high rigidity and resistance to deformation;
  • the ability to withstand external mechanical stress well.

A conditional disadvantage is the price factor - a round aluminum window sometimes costs 2 times more than plastic products. However, this is fully offset by the strength and durability of metal structures.

Bay window features

A bay window in a house can have a rectangular, triangular, semicircular or multifaceted shape. It is an excellent decoration for the facade of the house and creates extra free space indoors.

For private houses, bay window varieties are selected at the request of the owner: usually these are oval, semicircular or trapezoidal options. Bay windows can also be found in multi-storey buildings of different years. They are characterized by options for polygonal windows. A loggia or an insulated balcony can be converted into a bay window area.

The bay window requires the use of high-quality, well-insulated double-glazed windows. The presence of a large amount of glass can cause drafts in the room. Window companies provide a large selection of glass units of various shapes and colors.

Semicircular bay window for greater effect, it can be glazed with vertical windows. When installing glasses, special designs are used: flexible profiles connecting pipes and sliding parts.

Bay window in the shape of a circle usually installed on the corner of the house. Its glazing is carried out using curved forms. The installation of glass is not too difficult, but it is still better to entrust it to professionals.

Round wooden windows

A round window in a wooden house or an expensive brick cottage looks more solid than analogs made of plastic or aluminum, so real estate owners prefer to order just such models. Theoretically, these products can be made in 2 ways - by bending a solid bar and by splicing individual small bars (plots). However, in reality, almost all manufacturers use only the second option, since the first method is very long and costly. In addition, a bent profile made of a solid bar has a high tendency to deformation, which is unacceptable for windows.
Frames and sashes made of spliced solid wood keep their shape well. Modern technologies of joining, grinding and finishing make it possible to mask the joints well, so round wooden windows look like a one-piece structure. The advantages of such models are well known:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • service life up to 100 years;
  • excellent thermal insulation and sound absorption level.

The disadvantage of wooden windows is that sooner or later the outer coating will have to be renewed. The service life of factory paint on the outside depends on the class of products. For economy-class windows, they are 5-8 years old, for premium-category models - from 25 years. It should also be borne in mind that in the event of a manufacturer's violation of wood processing technologies, products during operation can change their shape.

Choosing arched curtains

Curtains on arched windows should be installed no matter what the purpose of the room. It can be space: kitchen, living room, bedroom and more. It is important to remember that when choosing curtains you need to build on the general style of the room.

The most versatile and practical styles are recognized:

They are characterized by such original elements as: lambrequin, fringe, lace, curtains with scallops, French-style curtains, tulle. To make the hooks, a variety of elements are suitable, for example: a scalloped ribbon, a twisted cord, a ring clip made of wood, plastic or metal. If you equip an arched window in the kitchen or in the dining room, then it is best to choose the Empire style, which is known for its luxury and imperial grandeur.

It should contain such elements of luxury as a lot of ruffles, frills, in which there may be gold or silver embossing, and you should definitely not forget about decorative details.

If the choice fell on the curtains on which the lambrequins will be, then it is better to choose those on which there is braid and tassels and complement them with a tulle veil. The choice of curtains should be made taking into account what color prevails in the room. There are certain types of color compatibility to look out for.

for example:

  • Blue can be combined with white, blue, pearl gray, beige;
  • Red is combined with white, yellow, gray, blue;
  • Beige tones are combined with colors such as blue, white, brown;
  • Green can be combined with light brown, beige;
  • Brown is combined with silvery gray, white, blue and green.

Curtains can be a few shades lighter or darker than the main color used in wall decoration. Contrasting combinations look very bright, however, provided that the windows and the door are in the same tone. It is not advisable to make the kitchens too bright, as this will affect the general appearance of the interior and even what state the guests of this room will have.

Blind or opening windows

Since the vast majority of such models are made to order, the client can independently determine the opening method. Usually the choice is made from 4 options:

  1. Deaf
    - this design excludes the possibility of opening the window. When using this technology, double-glazed windows are inserted into frames and pressed down with glazing beads. This glazing method is chosen in cases where a room with a round window has other sources of fresh air supply.
  2. With opening doors
    - to implement this method, the window is divided by vertical and horizontal imposts into separate segments. The most common option is to divide by perpendicular jumpers into 4 parts. In this case, the active elements of the window have the shape of a quarter circle.
  3. With opening top or bottom
    - in terms of functionality, windows of this type resemble fanlight models, in which the sashes are folded back or raised in a vertical plane. To provide this way of opening, the inner lumen is divided by a horizontal impost.
  4. Center-hung
    - this technology is based on the rotation of the active leaf around its axis. Depending on the attachment points of the hardware elements, such windows can open in a vertical or horizontal plane. In the process of movement, the sash is able to rotate 180 °. To ensure the safe operation of mid-suspension models, the fittings are additionally equipped with special braking devices. With their help, the movement of the active leaf is controlled.

When considering the functional characteristics of models with opening sashes, it is recommended to focus on the data from the table.

Opening typeIndividual characteristics
With opening top or bottom windowThey allow airing the premises and, thanks to the additional bulkhead, have increased rigidity. However, during operation it is not always convenient to lower or raise the active leaf. Also, with large dimensions of the structure, it may be difficult to access the entire outer part of the glass unit during window cleaning.
With swing doorsThis round window functions in much the same way as a regular rectangular model. The number of active leaves is determined by the customer. Integration of rectangular vents into a round design is possible. It should be borne in mind that a large number of vertical or horizontal imposts reduces the light transmission capacity of windows. With an insufficient number of active leaves and their small size, access to the outer part of the glass units is difficult.
Center-hungA convenient model that allows you to ventilate the premises and clean the glass unit without any problems. Thanks to the improved fittings, even large sashes move easily when opening. Such models provide ideal air circulation when ventilating rooms.

If it is decided to choose a model without active sashes, it must be borne in mind that deaf structures can only be washed from the back side. It is also undesirable to make a round dormer window deaf - read more about this on OknaTrade.

Room design

You can create coziness in the bay window niche with the help of interior items by placing in it several ottomans or a sofa and decorating with ornamental plants. You can use a different type of floor covering to visually separate the bay window from the rest of the house. The design of the bay window depends on the type of room and has its own characteristics:

  • Bay window in kitchen design. Typically, polyhedral or semicircular bay window types are used. There should be free space between bay windows and kitchen furniture, otherwise the room will appear smaller. Pastel colors in the interior will help create the image of a light, air-filled room.
  • A bay window in a living room design usually serves as a seating area. Here you can create a study area by setting the tabletop in the shape of a bay window and separating the space with curtains from the main room. The bay window in the living room can be decorated in the form of a loggia or a balcony using plasterboard structures. This niche can be used as an additional place to sleep. There are many options for using a bay window in the living room. Someone can use this place as a play area for a child or a sports area with exercise equipment.
  • Bedroom design. The bay window area can be used as a place for reading or relaxing by installing a window sill bench with soft pillows and a blanket there. You can equip a niche under the windowsill for storing bed linen and clothes. An excellent option would be to place a bed or a coffee table with armchairs or chairs in a niche.
  • Bay window with a garden. Any kind of bay window will do, but a solid-glazed model is preferable. Plants are placed on stands for better access to light. The corner, saturated with live greenery, will refresh and give a cozy, aesthetic look to any room.

Sizes of round windows

Due to the peculiarities of manufacturing and operation, the dimensions of round windows differ from those of rectangular windows. This parameter is also influenced by the material of manufacture.

The material from which the windows are madePvcWoodAluminum
Max size with flaps (mm)460035004000
Minimum size with fixed leaves (mm)800500700
Maximum size with fixed leaves (mm)200018003000
Minimum flap size (mm)10801000900

Since manufacturers work with different types of profiles and types of wood, the maximum and minimum diameters of round windows may differ.

Due to the existence of restrictions on the size of these products, a round window in a brick wall or concrete plane must be designed during the construction phase of the building. After all, the adaptation of the size of the opening will be too difficult or completely impossible.

Round window decoration

Although these models in themselves decorate and enliven the interior design, in some cases they need to be completed with additional elements. The main purpose of such an event is to limit the flow of sunlight and ensure privacy, but sometimes the aesthetic factor is also taken into account. Round windows can be beautifully decorated in 3 most popular ways.

Jalousie

You can install classic blinds on round windows, but you need to be prepared that they will be more expensive than rectangular counterparts. After all, the dimensions of all horizontal slats are not the same, and the technology for installing the structure is complicated by its shape.

Blinds-pleated

Pleated blinds are popular in the design of radial structures. They are also made according to a template, but the production process for such products is simpler. The choice of this option for decorating and darkening windows will allow you to easily choose the material that is ideal for the interior.

Curtains

You can be creative in solving the problem, you can decorate the window with curtains on round windows. In this case, it is recommended to pick up an original cornice and show your imagination in the process of fastening strips of fabric. To fix the curtains, it makes sense to choose separate fasteners, with the help of which it is easy to repeat the radius contour of the opening.
