Types of films for tinting windows
If we have already got down to business, let's teach the theory. The idea itself came more from cars. And although skyscraper glass surfaces are actively tinted in the USA, the road makes the greatest demands.
For the first time, the drift glass casting method was improved by the Pilkingtons. In 1947, the melt began to pour onto liquid tin, from which, as we think, the idea of making k-glass came from. After another 12 years, the technological process was made public (by the Pilkingtons), as a result, the whole world saw new prospects in obtaining high-quality glass.
And in the early sixties, the first film based on gold and polyamide appeared, which reflected the sun where the laws of optics indicate, as if a mirror were inserted into a frame.
More on the topic Accessories for PVC windows and doors
Manufacturing firms sprang up like mushrooms while the Beatles played their final concerts in public. In 1966, 3M took over window films.
But the idea behind k-glass is different. If during the manufacture of glass, a molten tin oxide IV is added to the bath, then the glass acquires completely new properties, starting to reflect radiant energy. As it is easy to see, in 1947 it was proposed to pour glass melt into liquid tin. Well, and then they came up with the idea, add more on top ... so it turned out k-glass. The distribution of the liquid in the bathroom was carried out according to the density of the substances.
It is not difficult, apparently, to guess that soon the idea came to mind not to solder the layer, but to stick it on. The bottom line is that everyone in this way could modify their window as appropriate.
This is how the idea of a polyamide film interspersed with gold was born. As they say, everything new is well forgotten old. And the new idea exactly repeated the meaning of the mirror. It is known that a continuous layer of conductive metal is deposited in it on the back side of the glass.
Over time, the technology improved and simplified, and we got the opportunity to modernize the glass at home. And this is thanks to the self-adhesive film with a release layer over the adhesive. Toning is far from the only purpose, they still distinguish:
- Anti-vandal films protecting the package. The thickness of the polymer layer here is from 115 to 600 microns, which is much thicker than tinting. As a result of the use of such films, a thief cannot get inside. More precisely, the break-in time is greatly increased. The polymer layer is very durable.
- Energy saving films echo the idea of k-glass and keep the room warm. The lion's share of the radiant energy is reflected back into the room.
Tint films are relatively thin and reflect sunlight onto the street. A good option would be to glue the car windows on the windows for the following reason: the standard regulates that the throughput of the windshield in the visible spectrum should not be lower than 75%.
But most manufacturers cover this parameter (in many countries there is similar legislation) and produce films with a throughput of at least 80%.And given the simple fact that a car can be found in a variety of weather conditions, we conclude that such products are also suitable for the home.
Automotive film attracted by the fact that it has shrink properties. With the help of a building hair dryer, it can be molded to fit any frame shape. Many homes have unusual windows, so car wrap is a good choice. Binders in this case are of two types:
- Drying and gaining strength due to this, relatively soft.
- Water curable. This type of adhesive is durable, and due to its existence in nature, it is impossible to use the most common liquid on the planet as an installation solution. Lather is also bad because it leaves streaks.

How to properly glue the tint film
Tint film is a polymer product, on one side of which a layer of glue is applied, protected by a release sheet. And all the art is to put it right on glass.
In the case of a car, it is much more complicated, but we will start with a simple one. Conventional home tint films are not heat shrinkable. We do not consider it the best option, because on cloudy days it will be slightly dark in the house.
First, we measure the glass to be pasted and, according to the data obtained, a film cut is formed. Some of the samples on the back are lined with squares, which greatly simplifies the procedure itself.
Check if the glass is rectangular. This is not always the case for old wooden frames. As for plastic windows, it is recommended to remove the glass unit before starting the procedure. To do this, remove the glazing beads along the contour with a chisel or slotted screwdriver.
Please note that it is important not to disturb the wedging of the sash. If the package does not want to leave the nest, then there is no need to rape it. Just cover with plastic on the spot. And the glazing beads no longer bother us.
Let's give a couple of tips:
- Before pulling out the glass unit, take detailed photos of all the seam plates and bridges (these are such platforms around the perimeter of the glass unit and soft plastic gaskets). It will then be necessary to assemble everything in exactly the same way so as not to disrupt the sash's performance.
- In the case of blind segments, there is usually no danger, but if the glass unit does not fit, then without a special plastic spatula it will be difficult to remove it and put it back in place.
- The glass unit is heavy and the edges are sometimes sharp. Proceed with extreme caution.
Of course, it will be good if you can cut the film directly on the glass unit. To do this, its surface is slightly moistened so that the tinting sticks slightly. Then the glasses are thoroughly washed, scraped with blades.
As a result, you need to apply the installation solution here. This is critical for the car version, but at home most brands recommend using soapy water. This is three liters of water, into which literally a gram of baby shampoo is dripped.
Window tinting in apartments is placed on either side, after which it clings with special hooks. We believe that most of the house does not have anything like this, so get out the usual pharmacy plaster, then:
- On the matte side of the tinting, stick two tiny pieces at the top so that two thirds stick out.
- Attach a hook to the shiny side in one of the corners.
Now start pulling two closely spaced (but on opposite sides) hooks. The release film must come off. Remove it completely so that the sheet does not overlap and stick to itself. Throw aside the unnecessary part along with one hook and, holding the tinting by the two remaining ones, position it in place.
Soapy water (or setting solution) will guide you through the procedure. Thanks to the shampoo, toning does not stick immediately, but allows itself to be slightly moved.
Sprinkle the back of the film with water and use a flattened spatula to expel the bubbles. Start at the top edge and work your way down.
As a result, a flat surface should be obtained, covering 100% of the required area, the excess is neatly cut off with a sharp blade. The tinting should be wiped with a dry cloth and the glass unit can be put in its place.
Try to remove any dust particles before installing the film, because they can initiate the peeling process and they will be visible through the tint.
How to glue car tinting on apartment windows
This film is more expensive, but it has excellent light transmission. More specifically, good samples reflect 54% of the sun's radiation while transmitting 80% of the visible spectrum. At home in the summer it will become noticeably cooler.
There are two nuances in this case:
- It is better to glue the film on a special installation solution. This is necessary to level out the tinting and eliminate streaks.
- Problem areas, arrows are simply processed neatly with a construction hairdryer. In this case, the film begins to shrink, and all irregularities are eliminated. At the same time, the section is passed by forcing.
With the help of a building hair dryer, the glass unit is tinted and removed. The glass heats up to about 45 degrees Celsius, then gently pry off the film from the edge and start shooting. The hair dryer follows the bend. Like the scales of a molting snake, the film will leave the surface of the glass.

Pros and cons
Window tinting has its advantages and disadvantages. Having considered all sides of the issue, you can make an informed decision: do you need a toning film or not. Let's start with the benefits:
- The film is installed on all types of windows, including glazing of a balcony or loggia. Its direct purpose is to absorb ultraviolet rays. The material copes with this task perfectly, passing only 1% of ultraviolet radiation. As a result, the room does not heat up, in addition, furniture and wallpaper are protected from burnout.
- The protective film prevents heat loss, therefore, by toning the loggia, you will make it suitable for living at any time of the year. Let's clarify right away that without a heating system, it will be very difficult to live on a balcony in the winter season.
- Carries out toning and protective functions. Balcony glazing is a great solution, but if your apartment is located on the ground floor, there is a risk that the window will be broken. For example, children playing in the yard will accidentally hit the loggia window with a ball. If you omit the cost of restoring the window (this responsibility can be assigned to the bully's parents), the question of safety remains.Flying glass can injure people on the balcony. If a tinting film is applied to the windows, the trauma risk of the situation will be reduced to zero: the fragments will be adhered by the film.
- Thanks to tinting, you will be able to perfectly see everything that happens outside the apartment, and you will not be able to look inside the room from the street. Accordingly, residents of the first floors can do without curtains during the day.
The protective films also have disadvantages:
- Only a certain spectrum of rays passes through the tint of balcony windows and loggias, respectively, there will always be twilight in the apartment.
- Protection from sunlight in winter will also have a negative side: the apartment will slowly warm up. This is especially noticeable if the city has problems with heating.
- It will not be possible to completely abandon the installation of curtains: when it gets dark outside, the lights on in the rooms will provide an excellent view from the street.
- However, even in spite of the existing drawbacks, window tinting is very popular.
The company's advantages over the services of private toners
If you, in pursuit of a low price, decide on your own (or turn to the services of private toners) to tint a balcony, loggia, window or partitions, be aware that this can threaten with unpleasant consequences. You may be stuck with low-quality Chinese film, which will begin to peel off, bubbles and stains will appear.
To save yourself from such problems, contact specialists with extensive experience and the necessary knowledge.
We are responsible for our work. We conclude an agreement with each client, which spells out all the conditions of work, guarantees and obligations on the part of the organization.
Varieties
The film, designed to protect the loggia and windows in the apartment, is of several types. Each category has certain properties:
- Sunscreen. Such a film is capable of absorbing up to 80% of ultraviolet rays. This is the best solution for residents of the southern regions who have to live with the air conditioner on in the summer.
- Mirror. In addition to the main function, it prevents the view from the street, although at night the mirror effect starts working in the opposite direction. Looks good on glazed balconies and loggias.
- Protective. This film not only absorbs the sun's rays, but also makes the glass more durable. Recommended for installation on the ground floors of apartment buildings and in the private sector.
- Matt. Immediately, we note that a matte film is not the best option for toning a loggia or windows in an apartment. Frosted films are intended for decorating glass partitions, mainly in office buildings or hospitals. However, matte film will make it difficult to see from the street, and absorbs some of the sun's rays. Therefore, if desired, it can be used in residential premises.
What are tinted windows made of?
The main components of tinted windows are a profile, a double-glazed window and fittings - it depends on their quality and characteristics how the product will meet the customer's expectations.
Profiles from renowned manufacturers
- The most popular are plastic, aluminum and wood profiles. When choosing plastic, preference is given to the products of German manufacturers - Rehau and KBE, or the more affordable domestic Novotex profile. The advantage of tinting PVC windows is a large selection of colors and shades, because thanks to lamination, a plastic profile can be given any color.
- A popular material for wooden window constructions is relatively inexpensive pine, durable larch or elite oak. In this case, the tinted glass unit will mainly be brown or mirrored.
- Using a warm NewTec or AGS aluminum profile allows you to create a larger window. As well as tinting plastic windows, aluminum ones give a lot of space for design imagination, allowing you to choose a variety of colors for a glass unit.
Tinted glass units with different characteristics
Toning will help transform not only standard one- or two-chamber double-glazed windows, but also products with additional options:
Energy saving glass unit | Multifunctional glass unit | Soundproof glass unit | Armored glass unit |
Double-glazed windows reduce heat loss, allowing you to save on heating. Low-emissivity glass reflects heat waves from heated objects back into the room. They are suitable both for houses with individual heating and for apartments, making them much warmer. | Ideal for south facing windows and large window designs. In winter, they help to keep warm, and in summer, they provide coolness, thanks to the ability to reflect heat rays into an environment with higher temperatures. | Soundproof tinted glass units for plastic windows help to reduce the noise level to the most comfortable for a person. With them, a busy trail or avenue will not interfere with a quiet relaxing holiday. | Provide reliable protection against hooligans and robbers. It is not easy to break them, and the film will retain the fragments. Suitable for the lower and upper floors of high-rise buildings and for glazing of private households. |
You can get acquainted with the detailed characteristics of various types of double-glazed windows by clicking on the link on the right. |
Reliable fittings
The service life and quality of the window structure with open sashes depends on reliable fittings. High-quality fittings for plastic windows - high-quality products from the German companies Roto and Siegenia AUBI.
Wooden window products will delight you with their functionality for a long time if you choose for them the Austrian fittings Maco.
DIY tinting
One of the indisputable advantages of tinting is the ease of its application. Even women can tint windows in an apartment. This is what the technology for applying a protective film looks like:
- The glass surface must be thoroughly rinsed and degreased. If this is not done, the film will not adhere to the contaminated surface. It is better to repeat the procedure two or three times.
- A roll of film is rolled out on any flat surface, a piece of the desired size is cut. It is recommended to leave 1-2 centimeters of margin around the edges.
- The protective layer is removed from the film surface. To prevent the adhesive base from sticking spontaneously to hands or windows, it can be moistened with a solution of soapy water.
- The film is applied to the top of the glass and gradually smoothed down. Try to keep the surface level: the formed folds and bubbles must be removed immediately.
- The applied film is leveled with a rubber spatula, the excess is cut off.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated. It is worth noting that window tinting needs regular maintenance. Therefore, periodically wipe the surface with a damp cloth. The use of abrasive or chemically active detergents is not permitted.

Window tinting in the apartment
Window tinting in residential and commercial spaces is becoming an increasingly popular way to protect yourself from prying curiosity and adverse weather conditions.
In addition, this is a great opportunity to solve a number of other problems, while spending a minimum of time and money.
The simplest and most popular way to tint windows is to cover double-glazed windows with special films. Moreover, there are several types of such films. So which one is best for home and which one is more appropriate to use in the office? Let's try to figure it out.
The ways
Tinting can be done in several ways.
- In mass. The desired effect can be obtained in the glass melting process. For this, impurities of metal oxides are used. As a result, it turns out to be transparent, but with different shades. Differs in resistance to mechanical damage. The high cost corresponds to the quality.
- Glass pyrolysis method. When it has not yet had time to harden, a very thin metal layer is applied. After cooling, it turns into a chemical compound. The finished surface is durable and has a mirror-like surface.
- Special films. This method is popular and budgetary, therefore it is in high demand. Modern products are practical and reliable. They differ in varying degrees of eclipse, they are mirrored and multi-colored. They additionally strengthen the surface.
Tinted double-glazed windows can be purchased ready-made. They are created during the manufacturing process. They have a long warranty period and are reliable in operation.
There are also films on sale that can be applied to the finished surface.
Types of films for window glass
Sunscreen
Sun protection films are most often purchased by apartment owners whose windows face south. Tinted windows covered with such material reflect at least part of the attacking solar energy.
As a result, the room heats up less on sunny days, and glare does not jump on the monitors of household appliances (TVs, computers, etc.) that interfere with watching programs and / or working.
Mirrored
This type of film on glass is especially in demand among the owners and tenants of apartments on the ground floors. And also for those who live in houses that are close to one another. Many people, in order to avoid third-party curiosity, are forced to keep the curtains in their apartments closed around the clock.
Mirror films for windows solve this problem quickly and inexpensively. After all, they guarantee a mirror (or, in other words, one-sided) effect of visibility, when those who are inside the dwelling see everything that happens on the street, and those who are outside - nothing of what is happening in the room.
This film has only one drawback - it does not save in the evening or at night. Since the lighting of the apartment in the dark becomes many times brighter, it is no longer possible to preserve the intimacy of what is happening with the help of only mirror pasting of the window.
Protective
In principle, both sunscreen and mirror tint films have a protective function. Any such coating can protect the room outside the window from unauthorized entry, because the surface glued with it beats badly.
The films have an anti-shock effect. And depending on the type of tinting used, the glass can be made absolutely shockproof, or the attacker will have to make a lot of effort to break it. However, the defensive option can work not only against villains.
The film is also able to protect people (and especially children) from the debris of an accidentally broken window. In the worst case, the film-covered glass will disintegrate into several large fragments, and in the best case, the fragments simply hang on the film, remaining on the frame.
Matt
This finish is a solution that is ideal for interior glass partitions in a residential or commercial space. With these films, the separation of any room can be improved cheaply and quickly.
They reduce transparency and make each of the zones in an apartment or office impenetrable and closed. In addition, matte films are able to protect employees of the company or residents of the house from injury if such partitions are destroyed.
The economic benefits of using this type of finish are also obvious. Frosted film is much cheaper than special glasses with a similar visual and practical effect.
When should you darken your glass?
For owners of apartments on the first floors, tinted windows will be a salvation. Now there will be no need to constantly keep them covered with curtains, not letting in sunlight and spending a lot of electricity.
In this case, what is happening inside the room will not be visible from the street. In addition, the windows facing the sunny side of the apartment are the increased temperature in the room, especially in summer. Dimming will help bring it down a few degrees.
Pros and cons of tint films
Everything in this world has positive and negative sides. And especially for building and finishing materials. Films that provide window tinting are no exception.
The advantages of this finish include:
protection from direct sunlight; an obstacle to the unhealthy curiosity of others; protection against intruders; protection from injuries associated with breaking glass in the window.
As for the shortcomings, they are also obvious: twilight in an apartment with windows finished with tint film comes earlier than in apartments whose windows do not have such a finish; and limiting the transmission of light (after all, the film only transmits a certain light spectrum).
Types of tinting and their features
Toning with heat insulating or sunscreen effect protects from heat in summer and keeps warm in winter. The film of this type can be of different specularity and darkening, as well as shades, which will delight those who do not miss the opportunity to decorate the interior of the apartment. Among other advantages of the sunscreen layer, it is necessary to mention its practicality, durability, reliability, as well as the antistatic effect and the possibility of easy cleaning. And, of course, a democratic price.
Quick survey: Which window is the best for the kitchen? From the article you can learn how to make ventilation for plastic windows.
The next type is camouflage film... When used, the transparency of the glass is reduced and glare is created. In this case, visibility is one-sided. And finally, protective tinting. It provides a guarantee of safety against intruders entering the premises, and the glass broken upon impact does not shatter into fragments, they remain fastened together.
Expert commentary
Vladislav Dobronravov
Leading technical specialist of Okna-Media company
The degree of protection is different: A1, A2 and A3. They are distinguished by the thickness of the film. Glass with a protective layer of category A3 will not break when an object weighing up to 3-4 kilograms falls on it.
This option is appreciated by the owners of country houses - the issue of property protection is especially acute here. But toning and special anti-burglar fittings make it possible to sleep peacefully.
Self-installation of tinting films
Material and tool
In order to properly cover the window with a film with a tinting effect with your own hands, you will have to take care of finding a tool in advance. For such an operation, you will definitely need:
- construction knife (but you can also use a retractable stationery);
- rubber spatula;
- a spray bottle to spray soapy water;
- and, of course, high-quality tint film in the right amount (it is rarely sold by the meter, more often in rolls).
- Application process
The whole process of pasting glass with film can be divided into 2 main stages: Preparation for installation. And the installation itself.
At the first stage, you will need to make the necessary measurements in order to know how much to cut from the roll in length. If the width of the film is not enough for the width of the double-glazed unit, you will have to carry out a more complex cutting, so that there are no ugly overlaps.
But the main thing in installing any tint film is not to rush! And be sure to follow the recommendations and advice of experienced professionals. The installation of the film on the glass should be carried out, adhering to the following algorithm of actions: First, you need to roll out a roll of film on a hard and flat working surface. And with the help of a sharp knife (construction or clerical - all the same), cut the material according to the measurements made in advance.
Important
It is necessary to leave a margin of a few centimeters around the perimeter of the film.
Next, you will need to carry out preparatory measures directly on the glass. Clean it as thoroughly as possible and degrease it. It is best to do this with the most common soap solution.
You just need to apply it and then remove it with a rubber spatula. And so 3-4 times. It should turn out very well. Immediately before pasting, the glass surface must be moistened again with soapy water. Then remove the protective liner from the tint film. And you will have to act very carefully at this stage, so it is better to connect an assistant.
Then the adhesive layer of the film will need to be neutralized for a while. And for this, you just need a spray gun: with its help, it is necessary to spray water over the adhesive film layer.
Installation in this case will be much easier, because, on the one hand, the film will not stick to the glass unit immediately and "tightly". On the other hand, it will adhere well to the surface. Installation itself begins with the application of the prepared film with its glue layer to the upper part of the window glass.
Further, by smooth movements of the installer's palms, the film is distributed over the entire glass unit. At the next stage, you will need to visually make sure that the tinting has covered the entire surface that should have been covered (and this should be done especially carefully when it comes to complex compound cutting).
Further, with gentle movements, using a rubber spatula, it is necessary to smooth the film from the center to the edges, leveling it and expelling excess air and moisture from under the material. Then you need to give the window a little "rest" (just so that it does not completely dry out), and then carefully cut off all protruding film particles with a knife.
If at the same time the edges move slightly away from the glass, they will need to be smoothed again with a spatula. If everything is done correctly, the tinting on the windows will look great and will be useful for the tenants of the apartment / house or office workers for a long time.
Tinted window care
Glass tinted with a film must not be washed during the first week after pasting, so as not to damage the coating.
Later, when the film finally "lies" on the glass, you can take care of the window as usual, avoiding only abrasive cleaning agents, hard brushes and washcloths.
If dirt has formed on the glass unit, you do not need to scrape it. It is enough to moisten it with soapy water, and after a while just remove it with a damp sponge. And then polish the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth.
