Features of the choice of round windows: the pros and cons of materials

Round-shaped glazing is primarily relevant for private houses and country buildings. It is almost impossible to see this in high-rise buildings, even if they are modern ones. As for the mansions, here non-standard forms usually change everything for the better.

the use of round windows in the facade of a private house

Some difficulties may arise when choosing and installing, since not every company is engaged in the manufacture of such glazing. This article will consider the types of structures, materials of profile systems, opening methods, priority locations and design options for round windows.

Types of round windows

Round window opening options:

Minimum diameter of round windows - 700 mm

Maximum diameter of a plastic window 2000 mm

Blind (non-opening) window. If it is decided to choose a model without active sashes, it must be borne in mind that deaf structures can only be washed from the back side.

Opening sash window. Such windows allow airing the premises and, thanks to the additional lintel, have increased rigidity. However, during operation it is not always convenient to lower or raise the active leaf. Also, with large dimensions of the structure, it may be difficult to access the entire outer part of the glass unit during window cleaning.

Semicircular flap system. This round window functions in much the same way as a regular rectangular model. The number of active leaves is determined by the customer. Integration of rectangular vents into a round design is possible. It should be borne in mind that a large number of vertical or horizontal imposts reduces the light transmission capacity of windows. With an insufficient number of active leaves and their small size, access to the outer part of the glass units is difficult.

Center hung round window. The sash is located inside the structure and can be opened in any direction, even at an angle. A convenient model that allows you to ventilate the premises and clean the glass unit without any problems. Thanks to the improved fittings, even large sashes move easily when opening. Such models provide ideal air circulation when ventilating rooms.

Plastic products for this purpose are divided into several types, each of which is determined by the method of opening the sash and, accordingly, by the different level of functionality of the light-transmitting structure as a whole.

Non-opening (blind) windows

Non-opening round window in the bedroom
The absence of imposts (frames dividing the window into parts) has a positive effect on the level of illumination of the glazed room - this type of windows lets in more light in comparison with structures that include one or more imposts.

Also, deaf models are distinguished by a low price, formed mainly due to the presence of a single, but significant drawback: windows of this type, in principle, cannot be opened, which imposes some restrictions, for example, when ventilating. Nevertheless, and this minus turns into a plus when the windows are located inside the premises, on the walls dividing the rooms, or in the inter-corridor partitions - with such windows, as already mentioned above, the interior space is better illuminated.

Openable windows

Rounded window with outward-opening sashes
Depending on the preferences of the owners, such windows can have one or two opening sashes, and they can be located both vertically and horizontally. In comparison with deaf ones, such structures, due to the presence of an impost, allow less light to pass through, but they allow full ventilation of the room: either by opening the doors, or using the function of the so-called micro-ventilation.

Center-hung structures

Pivot - the most demanded system for opening round windows. It implies the possibility of opening the sashes of the window, both vertically and horizontally - the structures are equipped with special components that slow down the closing of the sashes. Thus, the opening round windows have a wide functionality - they are easy to clean and safe to use.

Bottom-hung systems

They differ from the middle-hung ones in that the window sash opens inward, turning around the lower axis.

Arched window decor

The shape of arched windows came to us from the distant Middle Ages and managed to undergo a number of changes during this time. Various types of arched windows can be found in modern dwellings.

Types of arched windows:

  • classic arched windows. The radius of the arch is half of the width of the entire opening;
  • arches in the Art Nouveau style, when the transition from a straight line to the beginning of an arcuate rounding is very clearly visible;
  • semi-arches, as a rule, are asymmetrical and rounded on only one side;
  • trapezoidal arches;
  • pointed arches with a pointed top as a legacy of the Gothic style.
  • semicircular windows (as a rule, these are the same classic arched windows, separated by an impost).

Material for making round windows

At the moment, for the manufacture of round frames and sashes, PVC or aluminum profiles, as well as natural wood, are used. These structures are given radial shapes in different ways, and their characteristics have some differences. In order not to be mistaken when choosing, you need to find out the basic properties of each of the listed materials.

Round aluminum windows

Aluminum round window
Depending on the requirements for energy efficiency, a round aluminum window can be made from both cold and warm profiles. This allows you not to overpay when the products are ordered for installation in unheated rooms. Unlike cold windows, which are entirely made of aluminum, warm windows are made of profile systems with an additional liner made of polymer material. This element has a low thermal conductivity, thanks to which it helps to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature at no extra cost.

Cold and warm windows are made using roll forming equipment, which allows you to give metal blanks the desired shape. This technology is based on the fact that aluminum profiles are passed through a system of rollers. Under the influence of a uniformly distributed external force, after a certain number of cycles, the molded elements become curved.

Due to the properties of aluminum, round windows made of this material have the following advantages:

pros

long service life - from 80 to 100 years

high rigidity and resistance to deformation

ability to withstand external mechanical stress well

A conditional disadvantage is the price factor - a round aluminum window sometimes costs 2 times more than plastic products. However, this is fully offset by the strength and durability of metal structures.

The embodiment of the idea

First, there was a freehand drawing, the size was determined by eye and based on the remainder of a sheet of moisture-resistant plywood 500x1500 mm, thickness 15 mm.
Let's start implementing the idea. Cut out circles (rings) from plywood for the base of the frame and a little less for the door. From two more rings we make a base for a landing flange, to which we screw a strip of galvanized steel sheet, twisted into a cylinder without a bottom.

We glue the frame ring with two flange rings, additionally use self-tapping screws around the perimeter. We make the door a little smaller than the frame, and instead of glass we use transparent plexiglass from old stocks. We fasten with self-tapping screws from the inside. We attach the door to one furniture hinge. I decided to make it from above, so that the window would open slightly from bottom to top, in case of slanting rains.

A simple aluminum corner and a 6x50 galvanized bolt are responsible for fixing the door. The corner should be movable, it is fixed with the same furniture hinge. The first hole in the corner fixes the door in a position tightly pressed against the frame. The other two holes are used for fixing in the middle and maximum open position for ventilation. For some kind of tightness around the door, I glued a door seal in the form of a D-profile.

The flange made of tin was bent to fit, fixed with rivets and screwed with self-tapping screws with a press washer to the flange made of plywood. It has a depth of about 30 cm, calculated taking into account the insulation of the wall with foam plastic 10 cm thick. The second will be inserted from the inside, after the installation of the hatch window. Then the whole structure was disassembled and impregnated with an antiseptic-impregnation Tikkurila Valtti (Valti Primer) and, after drying, painted with facade glaze Valtti Color (Valtti Color). Color Graphite, looks good. It took about 4 hours to assemble, 1 hour to install the scaffolding and about an hour to knock out a hole in the wall (gas silicate block 30 cm).

Wooden windows all around

A round window in a wooden house or an expensive brick cottage looks more solid than analogs made of plastic or aluminum, so real estate owners prefer to order just such models. Theoretically, these products can be made in 2 ways - by bending a solid bar and by splicing individual small bars (plots). However, in reality, almost all manufacturers use only the second option, since the first method is very long and costly. In addition, a bent profile made of a solid bar has a high tendency to deformation, which is unacceptable for windows.

Frames and sashes made of spliced solid wood keep their shape well. Modern technologies of joining, grinding and finishing make it possible to mask the joints well, so round wooden windows look like a one-piece structure.

The advantages of such models are well known:

pros

environmental friendliness

service life up to 100 years

excellent thermal insulation and sound absorption

The disadvantage of wooden windows is that sooner or later the outer coating will have to be renewed. The service life of factory paint on the outside depends on the class of products. For economy-class windows, they are 5-8 years old, for premium-category models - from 25 years. It should also be borne in mind that in the event of a manufacturer's violation of wood processing technologies, products during operation can change their shape.

It should also be noted that in more severe climatic zones it is more expedient to paint the finishing cement mixture already during mixing. The color of the wall will not fade as quickly as with a paint finish. For this, iron oxide pigments are used.

Sizes of round windows

Due to the peculiarities of manufacturing and operation, the dimensions of round windows differ from those of rectangular windows. This parameter is also influenced by the material of manufacture.

Maximum and minimum size of flap windows (mm)

Pvc 4600 (max) 1080 (min)
Wood 3500 (max) 1000 (min)
Aluminum 4000 (max) 900 (min)

Maximum and minimum size of fixed casement windows (mm)

Pvc 2000 (max) 800 (min)
Wood 1800 (max) 500 (min)
Aluminum 3000 (max) 700 (min)

Since manufacturers work with different types of profiles and types of wood, the maximum and minimum diameters of round windows may differ.

Due to the existence of restrictions on the size of these products, a round window in a brick wall or concrete plane must be designed during the construction phase of the building. After all, the adaptation of the size of the opening will be too difficult or completely impossible.

Features of the production of plastic windows in the shape of a circle

Round products belong to non-standard glazing, therefore, when manufacturing them, a number of requirements and restrictions must be taken into account. Such windows are made only from wooden (pine, larch, oak) and plastic profiles (Rehau and KBE).

With a diameter of less than 1000 mm, but more than 520 mm, only one sash of the structure can be opened, in order to make both sashes open, two semicircular windows should be installed, docked together. You can get more precise information when calling a technical specialist.

Where are round windows installed

Round plastic windows. Description of types and possibilities

The installation of small round plastic windows will be appropriate when glazing attic floors and attics - with the help of such structures, you can successfully emphasize the curves of the roof, making its vaults more attractive in appearance.

The basement floors, where the garage or utility rooms are located, which do not need a lot of natural light, can also be glazed using round PVC windows. In this case, two goals are achieved at once: sufficient illumination inside the room, and minimal visibility of the window from the front of the building.

Blitz-survey: Do you have plastic windows installed in your home? From our last article, you can find out which PVC windows are best to install in the house and why.

Round plastic windows inside the house are often installed on the walls dividing rooms, albeit in the upper part of them - in this way, a single architectural style of the interior decoration of the premises is achieved, as well as additional illumination by natural light of the room located inside the building.

In general, there are a lot of options for using round plastic windows, the photos located just below fully demonstrate this.

Curtains

Protection from excess street light and prying eyes, in the case of round windows, requires a slightly different approach than in the design of conventional rectangular structures. In some cases, you can do without curtains, for example, when it comes to opaque glazing or when installing stained glass models.

Common types of curtains for round windows:

  • Pleated blinds. Affordable and easy to install option. In addition, in the modern market, it is easy to find the right color and texture. To purchase a kit that matches the specifications of the frame, you will need a frame template. It is easy to do it yourself, but it is better to turn to specialists - order blinds and installation. Pleated fabrics are perfect for both round and semicircular designs. Therefore, if it is necessary to arrange the top of an arched window, such blinds can be considered.

    Pleated blinds for round windows

  • Conventional blinds. A more complex type of design in production and installation. The rounded shape of the frame and non-standard fasteners add significantly to the cost. However, the result is durable and practical. Traditional blinds are easy to use, functional and allow you to adjust the amount of ambient light.

    conventional blinds for round windows

  • Straight curtains. The least common option for round windows, and so that it does not spoil the overall look, it is better to be creative. For example, pick up unusual, beautiful fittings, use an alternative fixing method on the cornice, or buy an arched cornice.

For rooms decorated in a classic style, lambrequins are suitable.

This solution is quite simple to implement, and most likely you will not need to call a specialist. In addition, with the help of a lambrequin, it is easy to arrange any diameter, which allows it to be used even for overall openings.

PVC window in the shape of a circle in the interior of the apartment

Round PVC windows, if desired, can be made unusual, both the frame of the structure and the glass. In this case, using the lamination technology, the frames can be given a color different from the standard white, and the glass can be decorated with a layout dividing the light-transmitting canvas into a fancy shape of the zone, or with a stained-glass pattern.

Let's take a closer look at what each method is.

  • Lamination. The use of this technology in relation to a window, regardless of its shape, implies the application of a special laminating film to the frame of the structure. The range of shades of such a film is simply huge, and therefore it is not difficult to give the window frame any color that the customer wishes - everything depends on the price of the issue, because in this case the cost of the final product increases by 10-20%, depending on a number of factors. Today, black and brown plastic windows are very popular, as well as models decorated with wood, preserving the structure of various wood species.
  • Layout. The layout is called the strips dividing the glass of the window into zones that form a specific composition. The strips can be applied in the form of a lattice, rhombuses, intricate divisions (see the figure below) and installed both inside the glass unit and on top of the glass, from the outside. Colors - any, but the golden layout looks especially luxurious.
  • Stained glass drawing. Stained-glass windows have been held in high esteem at all times - since manual labor was used to make drawings on glass. Such products look expensive, and are not suitable for all houses, because there may be a clear dissonance between a chic window and a modest building.
