How to fix blinds to the ceiling: installation features

There are many models of blinds, they are fixed in various ways - for example, to the wall or ceiling. Knowing how vertical blinds are attached, you can significantly save space, do the work yourself, use the structure to decorate the interior. It is not difficult to hang the blinds, the main thing is to do it correctly, then they will work for a long time and without complaints.

What are these products for?

Blinds are a kind of analogue of curtains. They come in different designs, can be made of different materials and have a significantly different appearance from each other. The main task of any design is to protect the room from excess light: a large amount of sun is not always appropriate in the room, so you need to close the window with something.

Blinds have the following advantages:

  • Attaching vertical blinds to a wall or ceiling is straightforward. Any owner can cope with it on their own.
  • Installation and operation are simple.
  • The space visually expands, the structure is easily transformed, it does not seem bulky, unlike a heavy dense curtain fabric.
  • You can close windows of any size, including panoramic ones.
  • A wide selection of shades and models will harmoniously fit the blinds into the interior.

Instructions for installing horizontal blinds in a window opening

To install horizontal blinds in the window opening, you need to perform the following work.

Step 1. We check the complete set and lay out all the parts on the work surface.

Make sure that the blinds are supplied with: fasteners for blinds (brackets) 2 pcs., Screws, the blinds themselves assembled.

Step 2. We try on the curtains to the desired place in the window niche and check if the blinds interfere with opening.

Step 3. Now we apply the right and left fasteners to the upper inner plane of the window niche, departing from its walls by 2-3 cm towards the center, then make notes in the places of the fastener holes. This will give you 2 marks on the right and 2 marks on the left.

Step 4. Now, using these marks, we drill holes with a drill. The drilling depth should be 3-4 cm.

Step 5. We fasten the right and left fasteners (in accordance with the sides and marks) to the upper plane of the window opening using self-tapping screws.

Step 6. Insert and close the upper curtain rod of the blinds in the locks of the brackets by simply turning and / or pressing the lever clockwise. If you use conventional brackets for fastening, then the curtain rod of the blind is simply screwed on.

Varieties of designs

The method of installation will also depend on which model you have. In addition, you will find out for which windows what is better to buy: for example, for a panoramic window, wall-mounted blinds will not work.

There are horizontal and vertical structures, they differ in the arrangement of the stripes. They are applicable both in residential and office premises, as well as in public organizations. There are two types of fastening:

  • Attached to the wall.
  • To the ceiling.

Most often, horizontal structures are attached above the window to the upper slope.The fixing for vertical blinds is more complicated and requires the installation of brackets. They can be attached to the wall if the window design allows it, but more often they are attached to the ceiling. This allows you to create more free space, completely close the window opening, leaving no free space on top: this way the structure looks more aesthetically pleasing.

Aesthetics and practicality

More recently, blinds were perceived as a kind of foreign exoticism. But rather quickly our fellow citizens, accustomed to traditional curtains and curtains, were able to appreciate the practicality of use and the aesthetic beauty of these designs.

Since then, the "triumphal procession" of these light-protective devices, invented in the 18th century in the United States, began through the apartments and offices of our country. Today they are no longer perceived by us as something unusual - more and more owners of residential and office premises prefer these easy-to-use lattice structures.

The only drawback that can be pointed out is the higher price of blinds compared to classic fabric curtains. However, the total cost of the structure can be reduced if it is installed on the windows on its own.

What calculations will you need to make?

Before purchasing blinds, you need to find out the size of the window. Many shops offer ready-made models, but they are far from always the right size for your premises. As a result, the canvas may turn out to be too large or, conversely, will not completely cover the window opening, which will not only look unattractive, but will also not solve the problem with excess sunlight. Most of the goods are made to order according to the dimensions specified by the customer.

If you are going to attach the blinds not to the window opening, then the canvas should be 5 cm wider than the window as a whole. The same applies to the height, it should exceed the window opening by 10 cm; more is possible, depending on what kind of visual effect you want to get.

To prevent the window handle from clinging to the blinds, you can use the brackets and move them away from the frame.

Roller and folding curtains

  • assembly method (rolling up with a roller and folding accordion);
  • type of material (fabric, bamboo, wood, synthetics);
  • design: open axis, bar, or closed box;
  • limitless variety of colors and shades;
  • light transmission (from absolutely dense and opaque, to translucent);
  • type of attachment.

Curtains that easily roll up into a neat roll are called roller blinds. Accordion folding curtains are also called Roman curtains. They are usually made from wooden slats, bamboo or polymer slats, dense (for example, fiberglass fabric). Folding curtains can be made from a solid fabric, folding like an accordion, or from separate lamellas.

The planks follow each other, tightly adjacent to each other, or there is a small distance between them. Such blinds are used to reduce the penetration of sunlight into the room on a hot summer day. Depending on how open the blinds are, at what angle the slats are located, the light transmission is regulated.

Roller blinds and folding curtains look harmonious on wooden and plastic windows.

How to hang vertical blinds?

Fixing the blinds to the ceiling
Fastening vertical blinds to the ceiling is not too difficult if you do everything in sequence. It is worth considering that the design consists of two parts:

  • Lamellas - strips that cover the room from the sun.
  • Guides, thanks to which the lamellas turn and move them to the side or up.

First of all, you need to prepare the tools. You will need:

  • Drill.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Level.
  • Fasteners.

In order to install the structure evenly, an equal distance must be measured from each side of the window. Mark the necessary points and connect them with a straight line. Don't forget about the guide indentation. The straight line indicates where you will attach the guide. It is important to ensure that it is not beveled. The guide will hold on to the dowels, if the ceiling is wooden, you can use self-tapping screws.

If the height of the web is more than 1.6 meters, several fasteners are required.

It is more convenient to fix the blinds to the ceiling with two people. After the guide takes its place, you can proceed to work with the lamellas. If the structure is disassembled, you will have to assemble the lamellas: for this they are inserted into the turning mechanism. It has special hinges and latches. The procedure is simple and intuitive; make sure that the seams of the lamellas are facing the inner side ("closed" mode).

Some structures have a fairly large mass, and it is not very convenient to work with them alone. If possible, ask someone to help.

After installing the slats, it is required to install a canopy and fix the cord, with the help of which the structure is controlled.

In order to prevent the cord from getting tangled, it is convenient to wind it up and fix it with tape, releasing it after the structure is completely stopped.

Installation instructions for horizontal blinds on the wall / to the ceiling

To properly install the blinds to the wall or ceiling, you need to do the following.

Step 1. We check the complete set of curtains and lay out all the details on the work surface.

Make sure that the curtain kit includes: 2 pcs. Universal blinds fasteners. (or standard brackets), screws, shutters themselves assembled. If you are installing blinds with a width of more than 2 m, then an intermediate fastener must be attached to the set of fasteners, which will fix the curtain in the middle, preventing it from sagging.

Step 2. We attach the curtains to the wall / ceiling, determine the exact place of their installation and mark the left and right edges of the curtain rod with a tape measure and a level. Further from each mark (in the direction to the sides from the center) we make an indent of 2-3 cm and also put marks - these are the places for installing the fasteners-brackets.

Step 3. Now we apply the right and left fasteners to these marks and mark the exact drilling points right along the screw holes. We drill these marks with a drill. The drilling depth should be 3-4 cm.

Step 4. Next, fasten the brackets to the wall or ceiling using self-tapping screws. The picture below shows how to do it correctly.

Step 5. If you are installing blinds with a width of more than 2 m, then at this stage you need to install intermediate fasteners. To do this, mark the middle between the already installed fasteners and repeat the steps from steps 3 and 4.

Tip: for the reliability of installation of heavy aluminum, bamboo and wooden curtains, intermediate fasteners are also installed 10 cm from the adjusting thread, since this place has a large load.

Step 6. Insert and close the upper curtain rod of the blinds in the locks of the brackets. If these are standard brackets, then the cornice is simply screwed to them.

What to do if a stretch ceiling is installed?

How to attach blinds to the ceiling, if it is tensioned? This task is not the easiest one: firstly, you need to think about what you will be installing blinds in advance. It will not work just to drill the canvas, it will tear. Secondly, special bars will be required, otherwise there will be nothing to hold on to the mount.

The beam is attached to the main ceiling before the canvas is stretched. A similar design is used to install a chandelier. Thus, the blinds will not touch the ceiling, they will not be able to tear it or cause sagging. If you do not have panoramic windows, and the opening is normal, you can get out of the situation by ordering a structure that is attached to it.

Blinds are quite convenient to use, they can effectively protect from the sun, decorate the interior. Fixing them is not much more difficult than installing a curtain holder. This can be dealt with without the involvement of specialists.

Tips for fast and quality work

Vertical blinds help protect the room from bright sunlight. They are often purchased in order to hide the space behind glass partitions from prying eyes. It will be possible to save on the total cost of such an acquisition if the owner of the house can hang vertical blinds with his own hands.

Installation diagram of vertical blinds to the wall.

Of course, many busy people prefer to seek help from professionals who will quickly, efficiently and without problems carry out the installation of the structure. However, the real owners of their home will prefer to independently carry out all the work related to the installation.

In the process of installing vertical blinds, you must be guided by the following recommendations:

  1. In order to avoid problems during installation, you should clearly define the place to which the structure will be attached. This determines its overall size, the length of the vertical stripes.
  2. All measurements should be taken carefully. In this process, it is imperative to adhere to the principle of "measure seven times, cut once."
  3. In order to hang the cornice, you need to make notes with a simple pencil on the surface to which it will be attached.
  4. Help is needed to install the eaves.
  5. When installing vertical blinds, you must follow the safety rules so as not to harm your health. When fixing the structure to the ceiling, the master must use a stable ladder.

In order not to spoil the aesthetic appearance of vertical stripes, which are made of fabric and treated with a special impregnation, it is enough to periodically remove them and immerse them in soapy water for 20 minutes. In this case, do not use brushes or other cleaning devices. It is enough to wipe the cornice with a damp cloth or cloth.

So, saving money, it is very easy to hang vertical blinds without the help of professional craftsmen. The main thing is to have the desire and act without fuss, competently and accurately.

Drilled fasteners

This type of installation is much more reliable and durable, since the screws screwed into the window frame or wall better withstand the weight of the structure and the constant mechanical loads on it.

Drilling requires accurate preliminary measurements and perfect horizontal alignment using a level

Drilling the frame will damage the window profile. Although they are insignificant (they do not violate sound and heat insulation), if you decide to further remove the blinds, when removing the structure, there will be noticeable traces that will have to be masked, for example, with silicone or liquid plastic. Roll or horizontal systems are usually placed inside the window. To hang vertical blinds - drill the ceiling or wall above the window opening.

Drilling installation can be carried out independently or entrusted to specialists.

For installation you will need:

  • pencil;
  • building level;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill (with drills 3 and 6 mm);
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver (flat or Phillips).

How to hang horizontal blinds

First, we mark the places for the mounting plates or brackets: measure 6 cm from the glass on both sides and mark with a pencil the places of the upcoming drilling. The line between the marked holes must be checked with a level so that it is strictly horizontal.

This is essential for the correct and long-term operation of the louver system. The window profile (especially not new) can crack when screwing in the screws, so it is recommended to first use a thin drill in the marked fastening points, and then screw the screws into the prepared holes

On opening windows, holes for fastening brackets are made in the upper part of the sash

Holes for screws for the brackets are drilled in the upper part of the sash (on opening ones) or on the outside of the glazing bead (on blind windows). Then you need to hang the blinds, securing them in the brackets. When placing the blinds system inside the window opening, the fishing line (latch) is pulled to hold the rolled sheet or lamellas near the glass when the sashes are opened. A hole for the fishing line is drilled in the lower glazing bead (below the main ones) or on the side of the sash, the retainer is threaded into the plugs, achieving medium tension, and tied to a knot. All decorative and working parts are installed on the mounted structure: platbands, latches, fasteners for the lever and chain.

We carry out measurements

It is necessary to decide on the type of blinds (horizontal, vertical) and the method of their installation (on the wall, ceiling, in the window on the sash, in the window opening) before buying. And even until the moment you start measuring. Because different installation methods require different sizes. Only with the correct measurements will it be easy to install blinds on plastic windows.

For everything to work well, you need to make the right measurements.

Another important point: you need to measure each window separately... Sometimes it just seems that they are exactly the same. Believe me, there is a difference. And the measurement results must be recorded and signed, which specific window you measured and which sash it is. Accurate and detailed records will help avoid confusion when purchasing and installing.

Into the window opening

Although the appearance of the products is different, when measuring, there is no difference between horizontal and vertical models. If you are going to install blinds in a window opening, it is necessary to subtract 2 cm from its width on each side. You can subtract 1-3 cm from the height of the opening. Such gaps are needed so that the canvas hangs freely in the opening and the lower edge of the lamellas does not rub on the windowsill.

How to measure when installed in a window opening

Please note that it is possible to install blinds on plastic windows "in the opening" not flush with the edge of the opening, but deeper - at the glass itself or stepping back 5 or more centimeters from the edge. If the opening has a trapezoidal shape, the height / width of the opening will be less for the glass, so we carefully measure it. And yet, in this case, it is better to put marks for installation even when measuring. Then you will know exactly where you will need to install blinds on plastic windows so that their dimensions fit perfectly.

Ceiling or wall

Here the measurements depend on your desires. The length of the blinds can be up to the floor or only up to the windowsill. Moreover, depending on the type of installation chosen, the lamellas can cover the window sill or not. So the length is whatever you like best.

This is wall mounting. When mounted on the ceiling, the length will increase., And how much - you choose

The width of the blinds with this installation method is wider than the window opening. How much wider depends on your desire, but the minimum entry is 5 cm on each side. But if the window is in the same plane with the wall surface, you will need additional brackets, which are not included in the package: the lamellas must be spaced at least 5 cm from the glass surface so that they do not interfere with the opening of the sash for ventilation.

On sash

When installing blinds on a multi-sash window, there are two options - to put one device on each sash or order one long one for the whole window. Usually the first option is chosen - it makes it possible to open and close the sashes when the blinds are lowered. If you choose this installation method, you will need to measure each leaf and record the results. The flaps can be different, so be careful.
